StitchLab USB
A Wi-Fi USB stick for your embroidery machine · firmware 0.28
What you need
- A Waveshare ESP32-S3-LCD-1.47 board: the one with a USB-A plug, a 1.47-inch screen and a microSD slot. Get it from Waveshare or Amazon. Other boards (the touch version, other screen sizes) don't fit this firmware.
- A microSD card, 4 or 8 GB is plenty (up to 32 GB), formatted FAT32, in the board's slot.
- Chrome or Edge on a computer. Phones, Safari and Firefox can't install firmware.
- A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The board can't see 5 GHz networks; most routers offer both under one name, and that's fine.
1 Put the board in install mode
- Hold down the board's BOOT button.
- Keeping it held, plug the board into a USB port on your computer.
- Let go of BOOT after a second. The screen stays dark: that's normal in install mode.
Already plugged in? Hold BOOT, press and let go of RESET, then let go of BOOT.
2 Install the firmware
Click Install and choose the port called USB JTAG/serial debug unit.
- A new board: say yes when it offers to erase the board first.
- Updating a board you've already set up: don't erase. It keeps its Wi-Fi settings.
When it says it's done, unplug the board and plug it back in. It starts as a USB drive with StitchLab on its screen.
3 Connect it to your Wi-Fi
- Plug StitchLab USB into your computer as usual, without holding any button. In a few seconds it shows up as a drive, with the Wi-Fi networks it can see listed on it.
- Click Open StitchLab USB, choose its drive (for example
E:) and allow the page to save to it. - Click your network, type its password, and Join.
Choose a network
Only 2.4 GHz networks appear: StitchLab USB can't use 5 GHz ones.
More settings: the screen's side, a fixed address
Leave Fixed address empty and your router gives StitchLab USB an address (shown on its screen). Pick one your router doesn't hand out to other devices.
No Open button, or the drive won't open?
Choose SL-USB_networks.txt from StitchLab USB's drive (or drag it onto this step) and pick your
network the same way. Join then downloads SL-USB_config.txt: copy it onto the drive's top folder
(not into EMB), then unplug StitchLab USB and plug it back in.
Using StitchLab? You can do this there too: Settings, StitchLab USB settings… The settings file holds your Wi-Fi password only until StitchLab USB's next power-up: it deletes the file once it has the settings.
From the command line instead
With the board in install mode (step 1) and esptool:
esptool --chip esp32s3 write-flash 0x0 stitchlab-usb-0.28.bin
That's for a new board: it also clears saved settings. Checksums: SHA256SUMS.txt.
